The History Behind Pepperkakebyen
Thanks to the contributions of kindergartens, schools, companies and many thousands of private individuals, every Christmas since 1991 Bergen has had the world's largest and most beautiful gingerbread city.
What started as a simple project aimed at involving children in the Christmas spirit has blossomed into a spectacular event that draws over 70,000 visitors yearly.
Initially, the goal was straightforward: build a gingerbread town to raise funds for children’s hospitals and charities. The growth of this cherished tradition over the years is remarkable, now including participation from hundreds of schools, families, and even professional bakers.
Every year brings something new, with treasured designs returning alongside fresh, imaginative creations. This rich history is what makes Pepperkakebyen a warm and inviting destination during the holiday season.
