A Stroll Through Bergen's Heart: Festplassen and Lille Lungegårdsvannet
Nestled in the heart of Bergen, Norway, Festplassen and Lille Lungegårdsvannet offer a serene escape amidst the city's vibrant life. These central landmarks are not just picturesque spots but also hold historical and cultural significance.
Festplassen: Bergen’s Central Gathering Place
Festplassen, translating to "The Festival Square," is a prominent open space situated between Lille Lungegårdsvannet, Rasmus Meyers allé, Christies gate, and Kaigaten. Although not officially named, a 1930 city council report referred to it as a festival area in the northern part of Lille Lungegårdsvannet. Since 1929, it has been the focal point for Bergen's Constitution Day celebrations on May 17th, even before its completion in 1936.Bergen Byarkiv
Over the years, Festplassen has hosted various events, including circuses and exhibitions. In 2004, a significant renovation transformed the area, replacing parking spaces with 3,000 square meters of Chinese granite, low terraces, benches funded by the Wenche and Halvdan B. Grieg Idea Fund, and new street lighting designed by Axel Sømme. By spring 2009, the final phase allowed visitors to walk out into Smålungeren on fiber-optically lit granite steps, enhancing the square's appeal.
Lille Lungegårdsvannet: The Octagonal Lake
Adjacent to Festplassen lies Lille Lungegårdsvannet, affectionately known as Smålungeren. This small, octagonal lake spans approximately 20,500 square meters and sits at sea level. Historically, it was connected to the nearby Store Lungegårdsvannet bay via a short strait, which was filled in 1926. The lake's current shape was achieved in the mid-20th century through land reclamation and straightening of its sides.
Today, Lille Lungegårdsvannet is a tranquil spot featuring a large decorative fountain at its center. Surrounded by a park, it's a favorite among locals and visitors for leisurely walks, bird watching, and enjoying views of Mount Ulriken. Benches line the lake, providing perfect spots to relax and take in the scenery
